Weight vs Time Grinding
While the new Baratza grinders are identical in hardware and looks, the dosing options are what makes them stand apart! Inside the Baratza Sette 270W is the same innovative weighing technology used in Acaia scales. It’s designed with the weighing sensor built into the container/portafilter arms, which automatically tares and grinds the programmed weight—pretty impressive! One thing we noticed is it takes a hot second for it to tare and our unit’s dose fluctuations anywhere, plus or minus, 0.3 to 0.5 grams off the programmed weight.

Programming the Baratza Sette 270 has a completely different feel. Both Sette’s grind 3.5 to 5.5 grams per second, but programming the Sette 270 illustrates it’s impressive speed. In about five seconds, our double shot was dosed! Also, since the Sette 270 doses by time, it’s more accurate than the Sette 270W has so far been for us. That said, weighing beans maintains better consistency between different coffees whereas time doesn’t account for bean density or size.

Efficient Outer Rotating Burr
One of the innovative designs of the Baratza Sette 270 and 270W is the outer rotating burr. In both Settes, the outside burr of 40mm hardened steel conical burrs is rotated by a horizontal-mounted motor. With the motor out of the way, both Settes grind more efficiently by directly dosing beans into a container or portafilter—great reduces retention of coffee grounds.
Functionality
While both the Baratza Sette 270 and 270W offer different dosing options, they function similarly. Both are designed with three programmable buttons to save your doses. As we mentioned, the Sette 270 grinds by time while the Sette 270W grinds by weight. If you want to top off your grounds, Baratza included a play/pause-style “pulse” button to manually dose. When we compared the pulse button, the Sette 270 responded quicker. That’s because, as we know, the Sette 270W takes some time to tare before grinding.
Outfitted with macro and micro stepped settings, the Baratza Sette 270 and 270W swiftly dial in for pour over or espresso. Our Settes were more than capable of grinding fine enough to clog themselves, exercise a little caution while dialing in!

Glamour
The Baratza Sette 270 and 270W earned the name Sette from their distinctive seven-shaped body—sette in Italian is seven! The Sette’s shape is designed to fit the horizontally mounted burr but has another practical application—extra space under the burrs.
Under the burrs, the convertible holder can hold a maximum container that’s 5.75 inches tall and 3.50-inches wide—measured from the arms widest extension. With a little effort, you can transform the convertible holder to hold your portafilter or switch to a pour over device like a Hario V60. Just remember that the Sette 270W uses the convertible holder for weight dosing (so don’t let whatever you're grinding into touch the ground/base).

Conclusion
Built with hardware to impressively grind 3.5 to 5.5-grams per second, the Baratza Sette 270 and 270W are two grinders to watch out for!
